Our philosophy
Our philosophy is quite simple. We wish to breed the healthiest representatives of the original Cuban type of Havanese as is humanly possible.
To this end we have sought out healthy dogs from healthy lines that best represent the original Cuban dogs that the world so fell in love with.
At the beginning of our love affair with the Havanese breed we began to question the reason that there were so many different types of Havanese seen in the ring. There were all different sizes, coat types, head types, movements, etc.
Using the original French 1963 breed standard and the Canadian breed standard as a guide we decided to try to breed for a more consistent type.
New DNA testing undertaken has now revealed what we have long suspected, that indeed all sorts of other breeds have apparently found their way into the Havanese genetic pool. All this was done before the breed acceptance into the American Kennel Club in 1999, when everything on the books as a Havanese became a Havanese. This certainly explains the degree of variance that still occurs in the Havanese breed.
This same genetic DNA testing apparently has revealed that some of the Cuban lines are still pure and relate back to ancient breeds only. Hence, we welcomed the opportunity to obtain some pure Cuban dogs.
Our present philosophy is to save the original Cuban Havanese both genetically and phenotypically. To accomplish this we follow strict health protocols and continue to place health first and foremost in our quest to re-establish the Cuban breed type. Our vision is replication of the healthy little dog that has won the hearts of Cubans these past 200 years.
